Client brief

The client brief called for an iconic pocket of space nestled within the suburban context to create a hub of connection and interaction for the local community as well as neighbouring visitors.

The request was to design an environment which visually draws people right off the street into a quiet, tranquil escape from the quotidian noise.

The environment was to reduce visual stimuli, calm the mind and subtly promote the brand whilst featuring the process of creating a perfect Plato Coffee.

Client comment

Indigen brought this minimal-inspired coffee shop with an inviting courtyard to life. They have demonstrated exceptional skills, artistic vision, and meticulous attention to detail. The space celebrates simplicity and invites patrons to immerse themselves in a moment of tranquillity.

The remarkable workmanship showcased throughout the coffee shop is a testament to the architects’ unwavering commitment to their craft. Visitors to this serene haven are embraced by an atmosphere of understated elegance, where every element has been thoughtfully considered, resulting in a truly extraordinary experience

project description

The physical manifestation of ‘White Space’ as described in the literary world as ‘the blank space left on a page for the eye to rest and the mind to digest’ was adopted as the base concept for the Plato store design.

All clutter and unnecessary elements were stripped from, not only the production process, but the aesthetics of the environment as well. This approach aimed at creating a space in which the customer can be removed from everyday life, clearing the mind with a physical stimulus pause. Focused attention can then be directed to the showcased process of the barista crafting the perfect beverage.

A meticulous balance between too little and enough detail drove the design process to ensure that the space would not appear empty or unfinished but rather feature as a luminescent transcending void in which the play of light – natural and artificial – texture and form would create aesthetic simplicity.

Each aspect of the space was designed with this balance in mind. From the ergonomic movement requirements of the baristas, their comfort, visibility, and interaction with the client right down to the custom designed production equipment, furniture elements and signage
